Tales from the Eastern Highlands

ulrike3A group of Press Gang members recently enjoyed an artist talk by Ulrike Sturm at Noosa Regional Gallery. Her exhibition ‘Tales from the Eastern Highlands’, inspired by the experience of living in the highlands of PNG in the 1970’s, is currently showing at the gallery.

Ulrike passed around and spoke about the development of her practice, including showing and handing around a number of artist books that featured printmaking.

The large scale, wall works in the exhibition are hand-cut vinyl. Each work is destroyed when it is taken from the wall, but Ulrike has developed techniques for reproduction  so they can be editioned. She prefers to hand-cut the vinyl each time rather than use laser cutting technology.

We all came away inspired by the talk, Ulrike’s work, and in awe of her dedication to seemingly tedious hand-cutting techniques.
